Foam Rolling: A Tool for Everyone

Foam rolling helps with muscle stiffness, soreness (from workouts OR sitting all day), and helps with myofascial release. It can also improve range of motion. While regular massages from an expert are a wonderful way to tend to these same issues and more, most of us don’t have a masseuse on-call and cannot afford them as often as we need them. Foam rolling can help in the everyday and between other forms of self-care.

With our often sedentary lifestyles, sitting nearly all day, driving long distances, and working on computers, tablets, and phones, it's easy to develop shortening of muscles, weakness in various areas of the body, decreased flexibility, and aches and pains associated with all of these issues. Regular breaks from all of that sitting can be very helpful, but, many times we still end up sitting for much more of our day that is ideal for the body. In addition to breaks, exercise, and making sure we pay attention to our sitting posture, additional tools like foam rollers can be highly beneficial.

In the beginning, rolling can feel, well, near painful (obviously, stop if if real pain occurs), but the more you roll, the more “hurts so good” or even pleasant it becomes. A foam roller is a fantastic way to add to your self-care routine at the end of your workout or workday. They are also relatively inexpensive and easily accessible. They don't take up much room and can easily be stored at home and in the office.

Foam rolling has been a lifesaver for me with my back/spinal issues and fibromyalgia, and it’s also been helpful with achy or sore muscles.

Are you a roller too? What are some of your favorite places to foam roll? If you haven’t tried it, maybe it could help you out!

I purchased mine from Amazon for less than $15 a few years back, and prices are still reasonable. Let’s roll!
