Proper Footwear for Exercise

Shoes aren’t just a fashion accessory. Shoes are an important part of safety during exercise, sports, and various activities. They help support and protect not only our feet, but our bodies as a whole.

When I first began intentional exercise as a young person, I was completely unaware of how essential proper footwear was and that the type of shoe I purchased actually mattered very much. I bought the least expensive options I could find and listened to well-intentioned, but grossly misinformed salespeople. I had no idea that an informed decision would have saved me many aches, pains, injuries, and annoying recurrences. I walked and ran so many miles in shoes that weren’t only inappropriate for the activities I was doing, but were also wrong for my feet performing those activities.

Eventually, in my early 30s, after encouragement from my then-boyfriend (now-hubby) to visit and a birthday gift card to help with the purchase, I found a bit of awareness and education at a local run and walk shop. I began to understand that my footwear was likely to blame for problems I experienced. I also began reading, researching, and becoming a much better-informed runner on my own.

Though new shoes helped some, I was finally suffering pain severe enough to warrant seeing a podiatrist. I was happy to find that there were no stress fractures or immediate damage. However, the longer miles came under discussion, and I was advised to dial it back. I bet you can guess another item of discussion; that’s right—shoes.

I was also told to try inserts for my shoes to help with additional support. It turned out that the inserts never actually worked for me. The one thing that has kept me running and experiencing less pain is proper footwear. I am adamant in making sure my shoes are appropriate for my activity, fit well, and are updated when needed to ensure proper support. I do still have long-term issues, but the right shoes are a game-changer.

As we approach the New Year, I thought this might be a good time to talk about this. So many of us will begin to embark on accomplishing resolutions that include new exercise routines. This post and video, my friends, are brought to you with the hope that you will protect your feet and bodies properly. Do your research, find an expert if needed, and enjoy your exercise and activities pain-free!
